You can paint over veneer- of course you can! I transformed my modern & damaged veneer table into a Cottage wood plank style table using nothing but paint and sand paper. Here's how I did it...
Firstly, make sure your table is clean and de-greased (if needed).
Using a really good primer, I coated it 3 times to completely cover the entire table. This is an important step for this project as it will not only hide the dark shade but it will help for the finishing paint to adhere correctly.
Let primer dry and proceed to have fun with your chalk paint. I used the Americana Decor paint I found at Walmart but you can use any other type.
Brush your chalk paint in long strokes and make sure (very important) they're all going the same direction, this will created your wood grain when sanded.
ok, now... sand using different grits of sand paper for more texture and sand in the same direction as your chalk paint strokes.
don't forget to sand off random bits and scratches to add character...
and pay extra attention to your table's edges!!
Now, using a guide ( i used the sand paper's packaging) scratch off straight lines to resemble your planks.... ALSO IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS YOUR CHALK PAINT STROKES!!
See??
and don't forget to do the ends of the table using the same technique.
what do you think??!!
For a first time try on "painting over veneer " this is pretty good, uh?
