We need a simple, inexpensive pendant light above island

We are remodeling our 1950s kitchen and installed can lights throughout, but I really want to replace the old fixture that is in the middle of the room with a pendant light? Any ideas?

If you have a ReStore around (Habitat for Humanity) you'll find a lot of old and period pieces available. The stock changes all the time so you may need to go several times. World Market has some interesting fixtures and they're pretty inexpensive. I also like the lighting at Menard's. You can also make your own pendants. There are some fun examples of DIY lighting here on Hometalk.

Local home improvement stores sell basic pendants in various finishes and then you can choose from a variety of glass shades. The cost is usually about 15 or 20 for the pendant then the shade would depend on your choice of glass. We did the exact thing in our kitchen because I wanted pendants over each island with can lights throughout the perimeter of the kitchen. They became a nice accent. I attached a photo so you could get an idea. Enjoy your search!

If you are handy and have any farms or farm supply stores nearby, you can get a barn light, it's shaped like a cone, hang a bulb in it and hang it from your ceiling. They can be painted too after you prime the metal shade. VERY mid-century looking with paint on them and pretty cheap to put together.

Another idea would be to use an industrial or outdoor pendant light. There are some very cool tin lights that could be painted or left unfinished. It all depends on your aesthetic. I have a kitchen built in the 50's and it originally had a flush mounted glass fixture. We ditched that in the 70's for a kitchen fan and have replaced that a couple of times.

A simple pendant light, about $15 at Lowe's with a vintage or vintage looking colander used for a shade !
  • I used the old fixture in my dining room and spiffed it up. You can see it here: http://southernwilddesign.com/dining-room-light-overhaul/

Wire waste basket, wicker basket, two wire hanging baskets fitted together to make an orb and spray painted, metal strapping made into an orb, drum shade made over in fun fabric, depends what type of lighting you like. Have seen lobster pots, colanders and all sorts made into lamp shades over the years.
