Equally concerned. It should be a space you love, with function and comfort considered.

Function first then appearance, changing the appearance is easy getting the work area and function you want and need isn't always.

To me it really depends on you personally. If you are not really into cooking then go for appearance first. If you love to cook then function should come first. One thing I learned was the "flow" of where each appliance and utensil drawer is does matter when you are cooking.

If I can ever afford a custom kitchen, it will be built around the specific needs and cooking styles of my family. Function first, but a pleasant surrounding would make me want to cook more.
