If your problem is indoors, an eco-friendly way to kills them is to sprinkle cornmeal in areas where you see ants. The ants will eat it. They can't digest the meal as it expands and the ants die off. Sweep up the evidence of success. I've used this method in 2 different houses and it worked like a charm.

Lysol spray kills the small ants instantly and after spraying several times, it usual deters them and keeps them from returning. They also don't like vinegar. White vinegar (from grains) works both as an eco-friendly house cleaner/disinfectant and deterrent for ants.

I've used soda cans. A little left over soda mixed with borax near their trails has helped get rid of them. (Out doors)

I have had great success with Terro. When I first started buying it it came in a little bottle and you poured the syrupy mixture onto tiny cardboard discs that came with it. Within an hour the discs were covered in ants. In less than a week they were gone and never saw them again. We moved and the next summer another ant problem at the new house. Now, they sell the Terro in the plastic baits. Less messy but still effective.

    terro ant poison
  • If you see them and have nothing on hand, I've used hairspray in a pinch.
  • Depending on where you are, boiling water can do the trick. We have a problem with them in our garage and I think we may use that to try to remedy the problem. I hate doing it but it seems to be an economical and non damaging to the environment way to handle this type of issue.
