What is the best way to paint baseboards when you have carpeting?

I will be attempting to paint our back staircase--the carpeted stairs are intimidating to me--the steps are framed on both sides, and I'll be painting a door, as well--FYI all the wood is that 20 year old "orange" variety and in bad shape. I want it painted white and I'll be staining the railing dark. All tips appreciated! THANK YOU!

Painted tape and a putty knife. Try to get the carpet pile taped down as tightly as possible so you don't have bitty spots of orange wood peeking out below your pretty white. Sand the baseboard really, really, really well before you start! Make sure you use good quality primer. Have fun. The white paint and dark stain is going to make a big difference. It's going to look classy!

@Cynthia - Clockworkinteriors @Jessie is right and has suggested the right tools for the project. You could also try frog tape - a type of painting tape. Make sure it is wide enough so you don't have to worry about the brush going over the tape and onto the carpet. The tape removes easily.
  • Thanks Jessie and Gail for the great advice--I'll be sure to post the finished project!

If you have left over slats from mini blinds, wedge between carpet and baseboard, andpaint

I use a 4 inch putty knife to push down the carpet and paint. The putty knife serves as the barrier and I can paint on it too and wipe it off before moving to the next spot. The stairs are tricky since you have the base and the riser to push back. Use a small 1.0 inch angled brush, this will help get in the corner of the riser and smaller works better to not get on the carpet, don't load up the brush with paint, use small amounts so it does not drip down.

Look at these at Home Depot. One of these will help. http://www.homedepot.com/s/paint%2520shield?NCNI-5

@Liliana Wells I have used these products for painting walls and molding but for the stairs they are not as effective for the risers on stairs and curve around the step and the riser, otherwise quite effective.

I used paint sticks to wedge between the carpet and riser, worked great and you can reuse the paint sticks.
  • Thanks for all the great tips--I'm excited to get going on this project!

if you have an extra vane from a vertical blind, it can be cut to the size you need. Tuck it into the space between your wall and carpet while you paint. Hold it steady as you work. Keeps the carpet out of the way.

You can buy one of those straight edges for painting trim to push the carpet down as you paint. They are really cheap and about a foot long so you can do a fair amount at a time. I bought mine at walmart by the paint brushes.

I know u have probably painted already, but I had the same problem... What I did was tape the carpeting, I used wide blue painters tape, pressing down at the wall/carpet join. And with the tape u can follow all the contours.. Worked great for me
