What color for the underside of the table?

We currently have a glass top table that is wonderful in our dining area, which is raised up one level from the LR. However, since we want to do more entertaining we need a table that's bigger than the 4-seater we now have.
The question is, "What color would you paint the underside of the table pictured below, to be the least noticeable when viewed up from the LR?" The table will be painted white. The floor is black laminate. Hubby and I both have quite a lot of theater experience and we both thought flat black would be the 'go to' color. (It makes anything recede/disappear...that's why its used so often in theaters (eg. the floor, the back wall, etc.)
We're thinking flat black. What do you think? -) (This is the table. We haven't started working on it yet.) (UPDATE: As always when doing a decorating project, if at all possible, the best way to 'see' if it works, is to 'see' it in the room/in place where it'll be. That goes for choosing a paint color, artwork, etc.
Yesterday I had a chance to sit and read in the LR---sometimes a rare opportunity. Anyway, as I looked over at the current glass top table, I was truly able to 'see' which color would work best for the underside. Turns out it'll be white...because when looking from the underside up, one is looking up to the white ceiling. A white underside will help with the continuation of the color seen up to the ceiling. Personally I thought it would have been flat black. ;-) Thanks HT readers for your input. Hopefully soon I'll have a finish product photo.
Our 'new to us' table. It will be painted white to look similar to the other photo.
This is our inspiration photo.

  • Okay first I love love love your inspiration photo and second, my brain immediately went to black when I was reading the background on what you are wanting to do. I'm excited to see the final product!

Before I even finished reading your second sentence, I immediately thought "black." The flatter the better. Should be very unobtrusive when done.

I too saw Matte Black on this table...if you are going with black may I suggest lightly distressing the table edges, the legs and apron area. Then to finish it off spectacularly, do what I did on several black pieces in my house. Remove all traces of dust from the sanding, and buy a product called Wipe On Poly in Satin, not Gloss! Just pour on a lint free rag and simply wipe on over the whole thing. Let dry for at least 2 days before light use & you will have a brand new looking piece! If you are adding chairs you may consider a matching look with the same treatment! Good Luck!

@Jan Loehr Actually, she is referring to painting the underside of the table black, as it would be seen from a lower level.

These are the chairs I'll be using with the table I'll be painting. I re-did those a couple years ago. We still like this table, but like I said, with its glass top, it cannot seat more than 4. Hence the 'new' to us table. The fabric is French document print from Hobby Lobby. The chairs were from a restaurant with dark brown wood and green plastic seats before the 'redo" :-)

UPDATE: We have to get this done before our son and family come in March. The race is on! :-)

Sorry to be the black sheep in the bunch, but was kind of thinking paint the underside the same color as the body. You make a really good point that black makes things recede, but it also makes things in front of it pop and it may make the fact that it's different than it's surroundings more noticeable, not less. Especially with the white chairs in front of it, And if you don't have many dark colors surrounding it when you're looking up (like a white ceiling) it'll make it stick out that much more. Just a thought. :)

@CK just want to clarify that by underside you are referring to turning table upside down to paint under the table top and sides. This is how I interpreted and agree black is the best colour - first thing that popped into mind before I finished reading. If you mean the sides and legs below the table top while the table is right side up then I would suggest you give it the same treatment as in your inspiration picture.

@Gail Salminen Yes Gail, it will be the part as you described in the first sentence. I am SO eager to get to this project... and this weekend the weather is supposed to be warmer so I can work in the garage without having to run the furnace out there for too long :-) I'll post pics when complete.

Flat black as a reflection/visual continuation of the floor. Just my opinion.
