What is steam punk?

I just noticed a butterfly using steam punk and I have never heard of this until now. Can someone elaborate on it for me?

As described by Wikipedia: "Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has maintained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power."

steampunk A lifestyle choice, wherein the participants embrace deliberate anachronism and quasi-anachronism as seen in steampunk fiction. Often characterized by modifying one's electronic gadgets to make them look a century out-of-date. Not to be confused with Renaissance re-enactors, who claim to eschew technology entirely; steampunks love fiddly gears and shiny metal things. (Urban dictionary)

Now that's what I like to see. Answers that are very clear and concise in easy to understand language. Oh Lordy. As the term is being used recently, it means to embrace the look of cogs and wheels, old keys, buttons, old hinges, etc. to create an unusual work of art. That is keeping it real simple.

@Laura Enez because of the answer above I now understand the name of this art type. The post it appeared in made it pretty clear that you can do that. Appears to require a lot of creativity, as in the post, to successfully pull it off.

It's a design look/style popularized by a subculture of people who embrace the look as part of their countercultural identity. The trademark style incorporates the irony of making new technology look like technology out of a Jules Verne novel, as with this steampunk laptop case: http://www.datamancer.net/steampunklaptop/datamancerlaptop-open.jpg

You might want to look at Deviantart.com . They have a search box at the top of the webpage and you can enter "Steam." Or "Steampunk." The site is free and you can see some decent art done mostly by younger people. I'm 60 and "discovered" Steampunk there. Like you, I was wondering why people were wearing gears and clock parts.

My project in creating my Industrial themed kitchen, someone mentioned to me steam punk and I couldn't get a good picture of it's meaning especially for a kitchen. I had idea of what steam punk was but only in clothing etc. Looking the term up as I googled "Steam punk Kitchens" I ran into this: As the blog The Steampunk Home describes it, steampunk “combines the scientific romanticism of the Victorians with our real present and imagined future.” This might help you by going to this link and paying attention to details. I like the idea of steam punk however some of it is a bit too much, I can take it in spurts. I think anyone who likes Industrial is going to relate somewhat or alot to steampunk. This link will give you further idea behind it's meaning in decor: http://www.pinterest.com/ak478025/steampunk-home-decor/

If you search for " first attempt - at - a - steampunk - butterfly" you will find a step by step instructions on how to do it. This one is rather large but you could make it any size you want. I was thinking a about making a pin and using old watch parts which I have.
