Corbel Continuum: Architecture Telling Our Stories

Many architectural forms are metaphors or symbols that have stories to tell. I believe the corbels I carved are an expression of the phases of life. The design is old, but I had an epiphany while I carved them. The corbel elements are in thirds, the heel of the corbel is a curled up young leaf. The center third is further divided into three leaves. One leaf leans back towards immature youth, one is in the moment, and one is like the 15 year-old going on 30. The "third third" of the corbel is the part actually doing the work--in maturity--the part that actually supports the beam above the corbel. One of the mature leaves bends down though, pulled back down toward the earth.

Brian you are a world of information! I find things like this fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
  • @Z Good to know you find this interesting. This particular analysis is speculation on my part, but you have to think this sort of philosophy went into what the Greeks did.
