To side or not to side

Rachael
by Rachael
Before the weather gets warm again and we're back to outside projects, I want to hit the ground running! We got the front and sides mostly done before winter but the back is still very sad. Look at the photos below and let me know what you think: to side or not to side???
Read the whole story at The Rehomesteaders blog: http://therehomesteaders.blogspot.com/2015/01/to-side-or-not-to-side.html
Here's the sad, sad back of our house.
A peek at the front which features the two different siding styles of the house.
A view from the deck--so do we paint the back like this (all the trim is already in place) or remove the trim and put up lap siding before painting???

finish what you started it looks great!!

I like both ideas. The front looks great. I kinda think the siding is a better idea just because you will have to paint it every so many years. Siding you put it up and are done.

I think I like the siding, the past with all the vertical trim is very nice for a statement on your porch, but it would be a lot for the back of the house. Otherwise, nice job!!

@Rachael Why not try it "the lazy way" and see how it looks, and if you don't like it you can always finish up with the siding... ;)

Insurance is more on a building that is sided vs. brick.

@Rita H Fortunately, this project won't be affecting our insurance. It would be neat though if we had enough limestone to do the whole house! Maybe the next one. ;)

If it were me I would put up the siding because I like the look of it with the stone. I think painting the existing exterior the same as your deck would be too stark looking against the rock and would overwhelm it. The texture of the siding softens the look of the walls so that the beautiful rock stands out more.

I am sure there is a program by which you could show both ideas, then take your pick..?

Side it. Looks terrible as is, while the rest of the house looks nice. Finishing the siding also will add resale value if you ever decide to sell.

The front looks great. I think the back should match. Great job!

I agree with Candy - I say paint the back to match the front of the house.

Whichever you choose, just be consistent. If you're on a budget, then I would paint the back to match the front. In the long run, siding such as cement board or that has a diamond coating doesn't have to be painted or at least it won't have to be painted as often as the board and baton you have on there now. Good luck.
