To shutter? Or not to shutter? If so, what color?

I want to install shutters on my home. Built 1970-71 with an odd multi-color brick (a medium rosy-wine, an unusual shade of sage green, terra cotta, a light shade of peachy-pink, and a light shade of creamy beige. Considering sage green (first choice) or terra cotta (second choice) because I want a pop of color, nothing neutral/boring. Trim is white and roof is brown. Shutters would look fine at small windows, but what about the large (12ft) window? Would 16" shutters look out of scale? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Kristy! I always love the look of shutters, just seems to add the finishing touch to a home. Since you have so much clay color of the bricks, I would stay away from the terra cotta if it is a "pop" you are looking for. It is really not obvious from the photos, but I can see that there is some green in the brick, so I think that a sage green would definitely be the color of choice. Painting the front door the same color would bring everything together. One suggestion? Is it possible to put window boxes under the two smaller windows on the right to achieve some visual balance with the large picture window on the left? And then add some green plantings under the picture window as well. Good luck! Make sure you post after photos!

@Sue@CountryDesignHome Thank you for the input! Really appreciate hearing opinions of others. This is a fairly old pic. I snapped it because I had just finished installing new roof and gutters. This was my AFTER picture. I have done quite a bit of planting since then, so the greenery under the windows is no longer an issue. I love the idea of window boxes, but would not want to plant/maintain them. There is another small window to the left (the garage). I will keep your suggestions in mind.

There is an article in Fine Homebuilding from Nov 2013 called Getting Shutters Right that might have some good information for you.

A nice brown shutter would be nice and some window boxes. Paint the front door a color as well

@Robin Straub Thank you! I am still undecided about the front door. Will it stay? Will it go? A new wooden door would be lovely, but not really in the budget right now, so maybe paint will hold me over until then. I hung those brown wooden shades in the sidelights and now that's confusing me with all my other color choices. Although I think brown would look fine, it's not really the pop of color I was hoping for. I will keep it in mind though. Thanks for the input!

The right shade of green would be a great pop

Hi Kristy, I guess it would all depend on how dramatic you would like to go, but black shutters with a hit of color something like red or a burnt orange would look great on the front door. Good luck with the shutters etc.Cant wait to see what you do!

@Linda Thanks for your input. Have you seen that "rule" that says the exterior of your home should include 3 colors and for brick homes, the color of the brick ends up being one of those colors? This website can explain better than I can. http://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/exteriors/curb-appeal/exterior-paint-colors-with-brick/ My roof is brown and my trim is white, so trying to figure out what the third color should be. White or black shutters won't work for me. I think they're a little too predictable and traditional. I'm really looking for color....I found a shade of taupe that looked awesome with my brick but it's just so neutral and boring. Maybe I could do taupe shutters with color on the door. So many options! I'm not normally indecisive, but this decision has me stumped!

I know I want a casual style. Not overly-traditional. I think my type of brick with the unusual color combination calls for that. If I had traditional red brick, I'd be deciding between white or black shutters, for sure. I have chosen what I'm calling a casual, country, English-garden style for foundation plantings so I have decided on this shutter style.

a trick to help on color I learned from Christopher Lowell shows.... SQUINT.. it blends colors of the brick to create a single total color,, when you do that. I too think terra cotta it would blend in. rather than POP you want.. depending on your front door color- your thought of green I like.. Our brick home is less varied in color, Roman brick, we got new almond windows.. I chose CRANBERRY for a new storm door and color matched the paint for the front and back door.., a POP of color but subtle darker shade

I had that color of brick on my former house. We used a blue/gray colored shutter and it looked great. You might explore that color as well!
