How to Build a Leaning Door Shelf (When You Don't Have an Old Door)

My wife, Jess, had her eye on a shelf on Pinterest made from a reclaimed door. We didn't have an old door, so I built the whole thing from dimensional lumber and added hardware for authenticity. The full build post and plan can be found at our site.
To start, I built the "door" frame from 2x6's and a 2x12, joining them together with pocket hole screws and glue.
The shelves were beveled at 10 degrees to match the angle of the door and attached to shelf supports. The shelf assemblies were then attached to the "door".
We stained the door, then applied a light coat of Vaseline to the edges. Then came two coats of antique white paint. A light sanding with 150 grit sandpaper removed the paint wherever Vaseline had been applied.
The Vaseline technique worked really well, leaving just the right amount of distressing.
I added a dummy knob and hinges to really make it look like a real door.
The hinges are recessed into the frame, just as they would be on a real door, by chiseling out some of the 2x6.
We really like how this turned out! And at less than $60 dollars, it was really affordable, too.
The plan and more details are at the link below. Thanks!
