How to Remove Scratches From Dishes

Scratch marks on your dishes from silverware? I had them on my favorite hot chocolate mug and I was not about to use all of my cream of tartar to clean it off. In fact I have found a great alternative that works just as well, and is much cheaper, to remove the marks from dishes.
Baking soda mixed with water into a runny paste removed the scratches from my dishes almost completely.
Mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with a few teaspoons of water to make a runny paste.
Rub the paste onto the dish marks.
You can see the on the right the scratch marks have significantly faded.
After! Rinse with water to remove excess baking soda.

I'd like to know how to clean antique platters which have discolored. Baking soda and hot vinegar doesn't work.

I have 100 year old china set that has scratches, but I am concerned baking soda might scratch the china.
