New Use for an Old Door!

Have you noticed the new craze with old doors? Everyone is taking old doors and using them as hall trees and collage type picture frames…..great idea!
But I had a different idea in mind with our old door on our home.About year ago, we bought another home here in Kentucky. This home had a devoted room for an office.
Ah-ha! that’s it….I knew what that door could be used for….a desk! Yep a desk!
So I began planning, preparing and making drawings as to how I could use this old door as a desk.
I knew this office had to house my hubby and I so 2 desks was not an option,
but somehow this door was.
I actually was able to dig up a picture of the door when it was on our house. We removed the hardware and are saving it..:)
So here we go….

I purchased 2 heavy duty “L” brackets from Lowes.

We secured the “L” brackets to the wall, and then placed the columns down at the other end.

We removed the original door hardware, i.e.; lock, hinges and gave it a good cleaning with Old English wood polish.
I dug out 2 porcelain columns that were taking up storage space in our basement after we moved in.
Now the door had window sections and that would not allow for a flat work surface.

Soooooo off to our local glass shop we went. We picked out a 1/2″ thick piece of glass and diagonally slide it into the back of my Ford Edge….against ALL recommendations of the glass company!

We made it home with the glass in one piece and carefully slide it on top of the door.

BUT…before we slide the glass top on, we took advantage of the window spaces and put some of my hubby’s coin and vintage dollar bill collection in there. Instant glass shadow box!
It is sturdy and we have used this desk for over a year now and simply love it.

We get compliments every time someone comes to visit for the first time.

We have a piece of our history from our very first home, and it is practical in use.
This is probably one of my most favorite projects that we have done so far!

So think outside the box and use an old door for a desk!
