Hi Jane, Can you give us some more details of what kind of ideas you are looking for, are you looking to fix your ceiling or decorate them? Also if you could post a photo that should also help us get you the best advise.

My husband and I lived in his grandpa rents home-circa 1940- we had NO $$ at the time...the kitchen ceiling was horrid.....I used a mess twine contact paper--going out of stock so I got 2-3 rolls for the price of one-- huge kitchen...it looked great. Plus I do art work - so I did a lot of paintings on walls on ceilings

Shira, It is a ceiling that needs replacing not decorating. The roof leaked and the seams between the sheetrock/beaver board have cracks. Replacing it may be the only solution but I thought I would ask for ideas other that a new sheetrock ceiling.

They make" faux" tin ceiling tiles that install fairly easily. They might work nicely with your older home! :)

You could buy bead board at the home store closest to you and cover it using a brad nail gun or liquid nails in a caulk gun!
