  • The laminate hardwood flooring comes in various widths and hues of stain. Get the tongue and grove, it just snaps together, Remove your carpet, remove padding, remove all nails and staples. If there are any unlevel places you get some leveling agent to spread on the floor to level it out. You and your husband can do this. You can even order the shoe molding to match. The laminate can only be sanded & refinished about 2 times because of the lesser thickness than real hardwoods. It would be less expensive that the real hardwoods and the installation can by done in house. They are very durable. Of course you would want to use a area rug to soften the area. Check with lumber liquidators on line first. They would have the best buys. Measure the width and length of your room and multiple the two numbers. This will give you your square footage. I hope that this was helpful and if I can be of further help, please just let me know.

We have wood floors, everywhere except our bathrooms....Love the wood.

I've had my whole house done in bamboo, love it. It is a bit cold tho when I first get out of bed, have slippers right there.

@Evelyn McMullen Thanks Evelyn for your thoughts. Is bamboo a bit expensive? Where did you find it? Specialty flloring or box store?
  • Cindy Cindy on Jan 23, 2015
For me, hardwood is not a good choice for a bathroom. Too much moisture can cause warping and water on the floor can ruin the finish. Carpet in the bath is just awful. Have you considered cork flooring. There are many beautiful pattern, it is durable, comfortable on your feet

Look at luxury vinyl planks too. Great for a do it yourself job. Some glue down and some are tongue and groove click. They come in wood look or stone look.

@Caroljane39 Carol Jane, the luxury vinyl planks are a type of flooring. They are solid vinyl. Some are glue down and some are floating with a click system installation. Karndean is a top brand. Armstrong, Mohawk and others also have the planks. They come in every color of wood you can imagine, and some come in a stone look. Home Depot has the Allure line. They have a click together line and a glue tab system line. My sister put the Karndean down and is very happy. We just bought some Mohawk click style to put down in our daughter's home. The floor is thin, often has a 25 year warranty, and does not have the hollow sound that the laminate has. Most can be picked up and put in another room if you decide you want a change. I believe most of the vinyl floors can be recycled too when you decide to replace them. The click system makes the floors completely waterproof. Laminate floors or wood floors can be ruined by water. Look for install videos on line. No fancy tools are necessary for cutting and installing.

I had typed you an answer because I swore it said bathroom. hahaha. In the bedroom, the sky is the limit. Our bedroom is the only room in the house that has carpet and I hate it. I want so badly to take it out but the hubs said I have to take a break from huge projects for a while :-(. Wood is great from a cleanliness standpoint because it doesn't hold dust. You will have to clean them more often because you can see the dust that does fall but other than that, what's not to love about wood? :-)

i personally prefer carpet. If you live in a cold climate your floors will be cold if using any type of hard floor. I live in Texas and still wouldn't change out carpet. Just my opinion.

I have carpet in the bedrooms even though I would love to do something else. Even in Southern California, it gets cold there and unless you want to purchase and have to clean large carpets, it is an unwelcome chill! I have Maple Hardwood, tile and Luxury plank vinyl in the bathroom so I really get to test it all out. I love the cost and not so cold luxury vinyl, it was easy to install (I did it while on leave from a Hysterectomy so you know it's easy!). The cleanup and the available designs are incredible, not clacking like manufactured wood floors and not so hard like real wood and tile. If you really love the wood or tile floors, consider heat mats to be installed under them to keep a constant temp and you won't freeze. Ultimately it's what your budget allows.
  • ...if you dont want carpeting, I love the new tiles that look like old wood and barnwood, it all depends on the on the style of your bedrrom. I dont have carpeting in my own bedroom, I love area rugs. :) ...and the low maintenance of tile or wood.

you will not like the wood flooring in your bathroom for when it gets wet as much as it will it start to come apart!
  • There are a bunch of great ideas, however you need to consider a few things. Wood, vinyl or any hard surface floor will tend to be cool in the winter months, Even more so if the floor is over a cold crawl space, basement or garage. This type of material also tends to make the room a bit louder should you have pets or live in a noisy neighborhood. However these types of floors also allow for easy cleaning which if you suffer from indoor allergies having a cleanable floor goes a long way from being stuffy in the morning. On the other hand, carpet will make the room warmer and more cozy. But tends to trap more dust so the allergy issue comes into play. Noise is lowered as well.

There's always a throw rug by the bed to counteract cold wood floors.. My son made me get rid of all mine since I'm subject to falling.

@Evelyn McMullen Carol Jane, bamboo was not all that expensive, got it on sale at Lumber Liquidators, they had installer, very pleased. I think the whole house including installation ran me about $8,000 give or take a bit. Had half done in the Spring, the rest done in the Fall. Did not have the kitchen done nor the bathrooms.

Two years ago, after much though,t I pulled up our carpet in the bedroom and added solid hardwood, not a laminate, and just love the different feel it gives. I was afraid the room would feel cold but it does not. I added a 6x9 deep eyelash shag light gray area rug at the end of the bed. I will never go back to carpet. In fact, I am about to pull up carpet in 2 guest rooms. I would encourage you to look at the wide hand scraped hard wood. I wish I had that now.
  • I'm also considering ridding my house of carpet. These are great ideas! I'm having cork installed in my kitchen in the next few weeks. We pulled the hardwoods up that were in there and were beyond repair. I can't wait to get the cork! My Grandma had cork years ago and it was WONDERFUL!

So has anyone put heat under a bedroom floor? Several have spoken about "a cold floor". I put a heated tile floor in the lower level and love it.
  • Yes you can install electrical radiant heat under wood flooring, Ideally floating floor is best, but if you are looking for a solid wood floor the heat system would need to be placed under the sub floor with proper radiant reflective panels to send the heat up, Only draw back is it takes several hours to get the heat into the floor area. But once its there, it can be comfortable.
