Kitchen cabinet painting

I have kitchen cabinets from the late seventies. The doors and drawer fronts seem to be some kind of particle board. Can they be painted or refinished?

I tried painting the cabinets and it worked for a little while but I would advise putting on new wood doors.

Make sure you use the right primer...and anything can be painted. I recommend a latex paint. I painted my laminate cabinets. Also, make sure you put a coat of polycrylic or urethane to protect paint from chipping.

We replaced the fronts along with the doors and drawers. Turned out great.

Y es, or you could cut them , take a square out of the door and put in a square of panel board.

They can, but you might considering just buying new doors. You can order them online at tons of retailers.

We recently purchased our home and it had totally been updated. The kitchen cabinets were 21 yrs old and the gentlemen used a product called, "Cabinet Rescue" I feel he got it at Lowe's as that is where he shops. It has held up very well and they look like NEW.

Have you tried chalk paint? I did my upper cabinets with chalk paint and they turned out beautiful, no sanding or priming required. Instead of waxing them I put on two coats of polycrylic.... I absolutely love them...

Absolutely they can be repainted. I did ours two years ago and they are holding up very well. They were particle board with some sort of wood grain paper covering, I just painted right over everything and they look great. changed the pulls and knobs and you'd never know they were the same ones. I primed them first then used semi-gloss enamel.
