  • Hi Barbara! Annie Sloan has her own poly that is very durable. I have not personally used her paint and poly on kitchen cupboards, but have heard it works well. Good luck!

I know you asked about chalk paint, but why not regular paint? I used Sherwin Williams Duration and the results were spectacular!

  • Question: Do you want to use chalk paint to hopefully avoid some of the prep work? Or is it an "old world" look you are going for? I do a lot of painting, but I don't want to go into specifics until I know what look you're going for.

Hi Barbara, I heard that if you use Annie Sloan paints, you do not have to prime or sand prior to painting. For me, that is going to be the one I use when I get ready to paint my cabinets. If I have to sand and prime I have already lost interest before I get to the fun part of a makeover. I really have heard nothing but good things about this paint on Pintrust. For me that's the one. Hope this helps, good luck and be sure to post your project when you get done. Have a great day. Diena

I use Websters chalk paint powder. It's a fraction of the cost of Annie Sloans and works just as good. No prep needed! I then use polycrylic. It comes in either brush-on or spray. This gives a nice matte finish and protects wonderfully. Good luck!

I also want to add that Websters can be added to any paint. Acrylic, latex or any kind of finish. You will always come out with a nice matte finish!
  • If it's less prep, I would recommend General Finishes Milk Paint--it's a high performance latex paint--goes on like butter, and if you're trying to avoid the prep work, you'll find this paint so much easier to use than Annie Sloan. They also sell a high performance top coat, but any poly would do. Check out their website for tutorials, and I wouldn't be surprised if they sent you some samples! FYI, I paint lots of furniture, but I wouldn't skip steps with my kitchen cupboards-i.e., light scuff, prime, paint, top coat...and I used a BM product. Good luck with your project! Whatever you choose, the difference a little paint can make is amazing!
