A friend of mine received this plant as a gift and I have searched trying to come up with an answer. She has given me a photo now which I hope it will make it easier.

Birds nest fern. Plant it out in the garden in a shady spot and it will get enormous! I had a couple of these. Yours needs putting in the garden or into a much larger pot.

Bird's nest ferns prefer to be slightly underpotted. As naturally epiphytic plants, they are used to growing in a minimum of organic material, and mature plants will elongate above the soil level as the fern grows and sheds lower leaves. The problem, of course, is that large ferns will easily tip over their smaller pots. When repotting every other year, use the next pot size up and refresh the compost.

It is a birds nest fern, and it is called that because of the center of the plant....It resembles a birds nest:-) IMPORTANT TIP; when watering your fern, be careful not to get water in the "nest" (the center) It will hold there and rot your plant and it'll die. And we don't want that! as far as not being hardy in Missouri, You don't have to plant it outside, Keep it indoors as a beautiful accent to any room!

It is a bird's nest fern as so many people have reiterated; however, it is not just a bird's nest. It is an old variety which is gaining recognition for its quite unique undulating strap shaped leaves. It is 'Asplenium antiquum', maybe even a sport named 'Victoria'. The more popular and common bird's nest fern would be 'Asplenium nidus', interesting and beautiful itself but much more spoon shaped leaves of paler green, some reaching better than 4' across and better than 6' high. Enjoy, you have a winner!
