Any suggestions on how to improve this desk

Wilna van der Heide on Jan 25, 2015If you have space in your kitchen you can make a small kitchen island out of this. The shelving on the side is perfect for putting baskets on with your veggies in. The drawer is perfect to put your chopping tools in. I would add shelves between the legs at the bottom to put my chopping boards and and some basins or bowl on. Would tile the top with an edging around it or a granite slab on the top would be even better. You can even paint it, to match you kitchens colors. This is a perfect piece for a project like that. I would love to have something like this to change into a small kitchen island.Helpful Reply

Lucy Nunn on Jan 25, 2015If you want it to still function as a desk, maybe measure the shelves and get rectangular baskets to sit on the shelves. Dark baskets would be pretty with the desk painted a soft color....or cover shoe boxes with fabric instead of baskets.Helpful Reply

Cindy Hagemann on Jan 25, 2015I often buy items like this because I ran across it and it spoke to me, but do not have any redo ideas in mind yet. I say keep it and wait until something strikes you to do with it - deciding on a purpose/use for it usually determines how to finish or redo it. Personally, I look at it as a kid's desk, painted fun colors with the top being left natural wood.Helpful Reply

Sbsb1005 on Jan 25, 2015If you do use it in the kitchen what about adding a base at the bottom and castor wheels to bring it up to "kitchen" height as well as make it a movable piece. Use the shelving to store baking gadgets or supplies. If you are not opposed to painting the piece adding cooking words to it could make it a fun conversational piece as well.Helpful Reply

Lisa Frost on Jan 25, 2015I have one of these only in light natural wood. Believe it is from the 50's. I am going to cut a board of the same wood, the size of the top and hinge it on the left side of the desk so I can fold it out for more work space and then fold it in to save space, put locking wheels on it and take the front of the drawer off and re-attach with hinges that will open it downwards for a computer keyboard when the drawer is pulled out. Paint or some other finish to be determined later. Leave the shelves for extra storage or to put things that I need at my reach while I work.Helpful Reply

Marion Nesbitt on Jan 25, 2015I'd add wood to the right side. You could then use the shelves for paper supplies, filing, etc.Helpful Reply

CP Jones on Jan 26, 2015Add a drop leaf to one side for more work space. Had one like that that we used for a craft table by adding the drop leaf. Would also work as a sewing machine table like that.Helpful Reply
