Patricia Morris on Jan 24, 2015I love the idea of painted brick, however, be advised that you must use paint that is breathable...regular lowes exterior will peel off immediately...latex is no good for brick or stone.Helpful Reply

Amy Riches on Jan 24, 2015What a lovely home, If it were me....Because of the grey roof....I would go with the biege. Then to match the shutters (not sure what color you having those done in). But whatever color....Out of plywood i would make southwestern cutouts...And adhere them to the brick. I would paint the cutouts with a semi gloss exterior paint. This would be a fun project for you and your mother. And it would be beautiful. It would also be low maintenance and add curb appeal. How nice it is of you to help her this way, She is lucky to have you for a daughter.Helpful Reply

White Oak Studio Designs on Jan 24, 2015I imagine it is very hot in that climate so for that reason I would go the lighter paint color too as well as play off the older gray roof. Do you think you could talk your mom into a brighter colors for her door and shutters? That would make the worn roof receede and not stand out so much. Pick a southwestern type color (a subtle brown orange or in the deep pumpkin tone) that looks good with the brick and a color she can be happy about....Helpful Reply

Barbara on Jan 24, 2015I like White Oaks idea. The right burnt orange would give it a lot of character, as well as blend in with the bricks and so Southwestern!Helpful Reply

Paula Coombs on Jan 24, 2015Thank you for the tip about the brick Patricia. I didn't know about latex on brick. Thank you Amy, she wants grey, i'm leaning towards beige, hoping to meet in the middle. She is an amazing mom, who is still grieving the loss of our dad two years ago. My sisters and I are hoping this will cheer her up. It's a small world Amy, we have a childhood friend from Phx, who lives in Pahrump. Christel Raimondo. Thank you White Oak Designs - you are correct, the summers are very hot and paint fades quickly here. She likes the idea of a bright door, we had picked out a pretty red color, but I hadn't thought about an orange shade, that would look good. We have an appointment with Dunn Edwards this morning. They are going to work their magic on the photo with the color choices. Thank you for your advice.Helpful Reply

Pam Bolton on Jan 24, 2015Dunn Edwards repainted the house across the street from me in Phoenix and did a great job. I would suggest using colors from the same paint strip. The two colors that you are testing beside the front window seem to be on the right track. The darker shade on the brick would "ground" the house and the lighter shade would tie in with the roof. For the shutters maybe use 50% value of the brick color. For thefront door a clear tomato red. Best wishes to your mom.Helpful Reply

Yvonne Day Aka Miss Ruby on Jan 24, 2015I agree with painting it a color that will blend with the roof so as not to make it look short and paint the whole thing the same color including the brick.. I would then add some architectural elements that will bring some color to the house and paint the door a fun color that is going on in the inside of her house.. It looks like you have a blank area between the two windows that could have a cool garden that pulls away from the house, like a sitting garden with colorful pots and lots of outdoor lighting so she feels safe coming to a home that is not dark outside at night. I want to add how awesome I think it is that you are helping her with this. At this time in her life many times we doubt our decisions and having a loved one there to enjoy this process with it sometimes the best medicine you can ask for. Sorry for your loss.Helpful Reply

Mcgypsy9 on Jan 24, 2015Here are my thoughts. The two colors that you have in the corner by the window would be my choice. I would paint the wall by the left window up to the garage and the wood in front of the gas heater with your lighter color. I would do all of the brick in the darker color and then do the shutters and door itself in either a wrought iron black (a real color) or something that your mom likes in like a medium coral or rust or something like that. I personally think the Black would really make it pop and then when you add your accessories they will really stand out!Helpful Reply

BSWW on Jan 24, 2015I have seen this era of homes painted in taupe and they turn out very nice and neutral - you could lean toward the gray taupes that may please your mom. Trim out the windows with white or very light gray and shutters should be a deep dark color or black to draw your eye to the house. I hope you will post pictures of the finished product.Helpful Reply

Paula Coombs on Jan 25, 2015Thank you all so much for your advice. We finally settled on a color scheme. (Dunn Edwards is the contractors paint choice) Reclaimed Wood (922) for the house and brick (we just can't get a color she likes that doesn't clash with the peach tone brick) Metal Fringe (923) for the garage door, Charcoal Sketch (925) for the shutters, Fresh Snow (976) for the trim/Fascia and patio ceiling and Royal Red Flush (722) for the front door. I scanned the paint chips in but sadly the scanner doesn't do the colors justice. We expect the project to be done in two weeks. I will post pictures when it's finished. Thank you again for all of your help <3Helpful Reply
