We've been living cable free since June 2009 and don't miss it one bit! Here are some tips on how to ditch your cable, take advantage of free HD channels, and try out streaming, internet tv services.
I have netflix, amazon, an hulu, I pay a big difference in cost to my advantage. Also have local by antenna and get up to 24 channels depending on weather.
We haven't had cable in a year. I bought the Roku 2 for 88.00 LOVE this little box! It streams Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Pandora, Crackle (which is free) many other free and pay per view too, without tying up your computer, you can also watch weather and play games! It has apps for exercising or specific hobbies. It has a remote with motion sensing like a Wii controller....Best thing I've ever bought! Even got one for my daughters room. We went from paying 90 a month, to 18!
We have been satellite free now for almost two years...we have 2 roku boxes. The first year or so we moved the big flat screen tv from the living room to the master bed room. This kept the kids from taking over the "grown up space" they have a small TV in their room and we limit their time.
About a year ago we moved the TV from the master to the guest room so visiting parents would have a little familiarity with their "lifestyle". We only watch an hour or two a week...I have not

missed it a bit...the part that we hated the most was all of the frigging commercials ..on average about 17- 20 minutes per hour ....we know this due to some "shows" that we now stream via netflix that are only 42 min long.
We live in the mountains so the antennae option is not viable...we only get audio on one station....I picked up a Barnes and Noble Nook about 10 months ago...it has a great Netflix app. I can watch a movie in bed or on the couch or any where with out having to disturb anyone else.
I can say I will never pay for cable or satellite TV again.
Roanna K Aside from the expense, continuous streams of noise, and pleas for your money from hundreds of advertisers. It is possible to be entertained without the commercial bombardment.
KMS Woodworks We are in between a rock and a hard place..hubs likes his golf, and I have not seen any up to date golf tourneys /channels any where else other than cable. I wish we could tho.
Ann Marie a great post. Thanks for posting . I went to your blog and read the comments, I dont understand it all, but other than golf I could see us doing something like this. We did have a roku, it worked great, when our tv quit, we "had "to get a new one. It has hd, also had to get a new dvd player and it has smart somthing so dont need the roku. Now, How does this sound, stupid? We pay for cable bundle, then ALSO pay for

netflix, home service and streaming. Both! If I knew we could find our "shows " elsewhere than netflix and knew where to find them..we would. I don't understand what i read about all the ins and outs of not having cable, and using other means, antennas etc. Hubs isnt very up to date on this stuff either. Great post, I am saving it , and your blog too!
Hellooo.....it is good to read that some other folks are able to cut the umbilical cord! 5 years ago- after realizing that we really spent more time doing "stuff" than we did watching TV we decided to take the plunge and cancel cable- THE SHOCKER!!?? We did not miss it- other things filled in the time space that we had previously used to viewing- we are still cable/tv free- will rent a movie on occasion but thats it and YES!! There is a teenager in the house- HE does not miss it- if you
