Most importantly - are you prepping the surface for painting? Or wanting to strip the original finish for staining? If painting, the object is to degloss. Use a gritty, abrasive cleanser that you probably have under your sink and scrub the curvy areas with a toothbrush. Rinse well, let dry, apply a high adhesive primer. If staining, I would use a chemical stripper. You can wrap small pieces of steel wool around whatever object you have at hand to remove the guck from the curves.

I painted mine about 15 years ago & still love them! They were stained a very dark finish & I wanted white , my hubby sanded them & I painted them with a pittsbure paint called Diamond Hard . They are sill just as white as new ! i do have to touch them up sometime [maybe once a year ] & then its only where the handels are , takes me about 10 minutes . I have never been sorry !
