What is a simple but neat way to repair a torn hole in the carpet?

The dog wanted to get out through a closed door and dug a hole in the carpet. If possible I would like to repair this myself. It is an older carpet and we get a lot of traffic there from the hallway. We do have pieces of carpet from when it was first place in the house.

Having the remints of a old carpet is good, however you will find that a lot of fading has gone on sense the carpet was placed down, also as carpet ages the backing becomes brittle which is the largest reason it is almost impossible to get a loose carpet re-stretched for fear of tearing the backing when being pulled. You need to find carpet tape. This really sticky tape is about four inches wide and has a peel off paper to expose the glue. After cutting the damaged carpet out and carefully cutting the new patch material to fit. you simply place the tape under the old carpet, pull the paper off to expose the sticky side then once the tape is on all four sides stuck to the old carpet leaving exposed about 2 inches of the tape, place the new patch into the hole onto the tape and press. Your done! Its a bit tricky and I would suggest that you get some blue painters tape if the nap of the carpet is long, Place this tape on the surface of the carpet to hold the nap of the carpet back to prevent it from coming into contact with the patch tape underneath. Also be sure to match the carpet pile with the same direction as the old. If its turned it will always show up.

I had the same problem awhile back. I had a carpet company come out. Using a carpet knife, they cut out a piece of carpet from a back corner of a closet, then trimmed the edges of the holethat was damaged. At that point they used carpet tape and an iron to attach the replacement piece to the carpet on the floor. It can also be sewn with a carpet needle. If it is not a real high traffic area I tempted to try fabric glue. I've had a lot of luck using it for a number of things

They can rent an iron but for a small patch the carpet splicing tape will work fine.

If this is a high traffic area, what about removing a section of the carpet in front of the door, and replacing with tile. Daughter bought a home with wall-to-wall, has 3 dogs. Had tile installed by front door area, including the inside of the closet. Tiler also did tile same height as her baseboard on walls including inside the closet. Tough, completely water proof, claw proof, worry proof. Your problem may happen again so it would be worth it, in my opinion, to be proactive.

About twenty years ago, my sister and I were decorating our church sanctuary for a friends' wedding. We noticed a hole in the carpet behind the altar. We dug around and found some scraps of the carpet, cut it a little larger than the hole, put the scrap in the hole, pressing around the edges and center until it lay flat. You couldn't tell there was a hole there. Since yours is in a heavy traffic area, you might consider making a circular loop of duct tape with the sticky side on the outside and placing it underneath the patch, depending on what is underneath your carpet. Hope this helps! This carpet was very old, and the scrap perfectly matched the carpet.
