I Am a Plant Killer. Some explanation required.

I have this passive aggressive attitude toward house plants. I feel like they should be able to get along pretty darn well on their own without me holding their hand, if it wants to be taken seriously and earn my respect. I have no patience whatsoever for sissy plants that need to be kept at 69 1/2 degrees Fahrenheit and given 300 milliliters of pure mountain spring water every 20 hours except during a full moon, while singing soft Irish lullabies and caressing it softly.Come on now! I say. Show a little spunk!

Toni Teague on May 12, 2014There is a sad situation of over watering plants. Depending on the plant a good rule of thumb is to water houseplants weekly. Hanging baskets that are outside in the hot sun might even require watering more than once daily. It depends on if they are in full sun or partial shade or even full sun but bright light. You need to really read the labels on the plants to determine how they are to be cared for and water only when dry. But do not wait until they are wilted before you water. Some plants will die if even left to dry out completely for even one day. It looks like your poor hanging basket of Million Belles Petunia's was allowed to dry out too much. Give it a toss and buy another. The good thing about that particular variety is you would not have had to dead it. Had it lived to last the summer it would have not needed deadheading. Now it needs a funeral. We have a summer home on the Ohio river. I have learned that most hanging baskets require too much daily care and water for our life style. I have gone to buying Portulaca hanging baskets rather than the fussy petunia and impatiens baskets. The portulaca can survive days without watering. It was the answer to my problems,

Kris Lee on May 15, 2014I have several house plants. They all do very well, but have become very overgrown. I have a large split leaf philodendron and it has become so big I don't know where to put it so that it is out of the way. I also have a palm, a ficus, another 2-3 philodendron's and a bromiliead. The palm, bromiliead and the split leaf philo, were all in a small basket from my grandmother's funeral and they are all so large, they are taking over.....what to do, what to do. Murder is out of the question, though I could ship them off to a nursery for resale....?
