How to Turn an Old Metal Filing Cabinet Into a Side Table

Rearranging my living room one day I decided I needed a new side table between a couch and a chair. The one I had was too big. So I pulled an old metal filing cabinet out of the garage and turned it into my side table. I needed it to be flat on top so I could put my lamp on it - and there is a handle on the top of the cabinet that I had to work around.
It's an industrial piece and I didn't do anything but clean it up so I know it's not for everyone! Not everyone wants a bit of rust on their living room furniture! But it's been working out great for months now - it gives us a bit of storage for things like the remote, notebooks, pencils, and a few other homeschool items.
Here is the handle on top - I needed it flat because I really need the lamp I used beside my chair.
My solution needed to be quick and easy and use something I had on hand - cause I wanted it done NOW!!
My lamp sits firmly on the book and I even managed to squeeze in a coaster for my coffee cup :) It's worked wonderfully for months now. I love it! Come on over to the blog to see just how I did this!
