Has anyone ever had this problem making Mod Podge?

I have made lots of mod podge always using the half and half recipe but found a recipe I had printed off Pinterest, I think, and decided to try it. It contained olive oil to make it glossy which appealed to me. It was a bit goopy and thick but I figured I could thin if necessary when needed. It also contained some sugar, plus the flour and water and you heated it on the stove. I found this three days later......

It looks like it's boiling
It pushed the lid off and ran all down the sides.

sounds close to a recipe for homemade yogurt I used to have or a sourdough bread starter the ingredients of which mixed cause it to live and grow.....

elmers glue and water ,1 parts water and 2 part glue
  • Did you use self rising flour? It has obviously fermented creating a "mother" as it feeds off the sugar.

I bet that's the answer. Thanks Peggy Ann.

I made one and it went mouldy, sticking to the half glue

I thought to myself when I put this warm goop on the shelf that it might go mouldy but I never expected it to come alive. I think I will just stick to the old tried and true one water two glue.

did it harden???? paint it and put a candle in it... besides i would be afraid of insects being drawn to the sugar

Funny Nicki. :) I didn't keep it long enough to see if it would harden but it was still bubbling when I threw it out. No more cooked mod podge for me.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I have never used mod podge, but have been thinking about trying it. When you said one part water and two parts glue, is that to make mod podge from scratch instead of buying it?

Yes Pg, but whatever you do don't use that recipe unless you want bread. I think most people just mix water and glue, some one to one, some one to two, and I have done that and it works just fine. I was playing around with a recipe I found on Pinterest. Good luck, it's really easy and fun.

It looks to me like you made sourdough starter. Wild yeast in the air landed on your concoction and liked it.
