Using chalk paint

I wanted to paint a sofa black and distress it but the underneath paint on the sofa was dirty white and yellowy so when I tried to distress that color came through and looked terrible. Any suggestions? Do you think if I painted it gold first or should I pick a different color all together? Thanks

When I paint upholstery, I make sure I clean first thoroughly. My first coat would be the color I would like to see when the distressing is done. It's very difficult to distress upholstery and have it come out with a great result. Fabric is difficult to distress. I might paint the fabric with my main color with at least two coats. Sanding in between each coat. Then using a watered down "distress" color and use it lightly to add your distress. I will be curious how this turns out. Please keep us posted. sk

can you sand off the area with a light sandpaper first then paint it? That might help you when you distress it to get a more desirable color underneath.
