To move your cabinets to "lighter" you will have to bleached them...I would not choose that option or Paint. I have painted kitchen cabinets in the last three house we renovated and two of those houses I painted the cabinets twice. Paint is a wonderful option. I have loved the finally product. BUT the key to great painted cabinets is the prep work that goes into them first. It can be tedious but so well worth it. Take the doors, hardware off first. Make sure the cabinets have been cleaned of all the grease, grim and dirt. There are several ways to achieve this, TSP cleaner, dawn/bleach, Mr. Clean sponges and "go old elbow grease". Lightly sand to smooth the finish and wipe off with a tack cloth. Prime with a good oil based primer like Zissar, which can be painted over with a latex paint. Pick your color and I use a 4" cabinet roller and a small (no bigger) than a 2" angled brush. Watch for puddles and drips and do one side of the doors at a time. This is the tedious part. Waiting for the drying time. Be patient, you will be glad you did. It takes me at least a week and sometimes into two if I have alot of cabinets. Everything I need you can find at Lowes or Home Depot. Happy Painting.

My cabinets were pine stained a dark color. We sanded them almost all the way down. Primed and painted white. My kitchen looks bigger and it's like a new room. Sanding was a pain but using a belt and palm sander made it less painful and faster.

Wow I have been wanting to do this. We painted our bathroom vanity with many disasters before I bought a Wagner Flexio 690 sprayer. That sprayer is wonderful, no clogs, no brush marks. I used latex paint in the bathroom, but am thinking of oil based for kitchen also in ivory or cream color, I do not want white, white. From my experience with the bathroom, use a good primer. Yes the prep work is extensive, but I think worth it. I am waiting to do the kitchen, because I am still recuperating from the bathroom mishaps. Let me know what you decide to do as I have the same situation.
