Reclaimed Wood Into Large Storage Crates

2 Hours
Easy
Sometimes when I create something useful the first thing out of my mouth is, "Why didn't I do this sooner?" I mean really? A couple of hours of work is totally worth it! I have a very cool pile of reclaimed scrap wood in my back yard and it has great potential. So when the toys were over taking my little boys room, literally over flowing out of the containers they were in, I realized it was time to fix the problem. Using the reclaimed wood I created some large storage crates and I couldn't be happier with them! They fixed a problem and they make the space in their closest super cute, again..."why didn't I do this sooner?"
Cool pile of reclaimed wood in my back yard. I got this free from an old nursery in Boulder Colorado, gotta love the craig's list free section!
I measured the space in my boys closet and cut the wood to make two large crates. I used scrap 1x2's to glue and nail the boards to in order to make the sides.
Then I glued and nailed the other board to complete a box, and added a bottom (not pictured.
After staining it and giving it some texture with some white paint I ended up using dog rope toys from the dollar store to make handles.
I drilled two holes and used wire to wrap the handles. I twisted the wire inside the crate and hammered it flat, then I put a dab of hot glue over the wire to cover it so little arms and hands don't get scratched.

They work great and I love the fun colors, lots of possibilities here!

They are doing a perfect job, and we even have room to spare!

I added some fun words to the front and sides, why not make it cute, right? For a full tutorial please check out my blog post!
