  • There are several things that you can do. You can paint it, however I am not a fan of that. As soon as anything organic such as paint is placed on floor you risk difficulty in keeping clean and mold free. But it is one way of covering it. Another method is to use a good cement leveling compound over the tile to fill in the gaps then use a sheet vinyl or vinyl tiles. The leveling compound is to prevent the grout lines from showing though the tile as it settles over time. Another method is if its still sound and good shape, simply tile right over it.

There are companies that do a chemical bonding process. They come in one day & do the color you choose & return the next day to do the clear seal. I had this done in all 3 of my bathrooms--countertops & tub/shower surround. After 4 years it still looks like day 1. Mine looks like stone. You can choose any color and any amount of flecks of color or go solid. The color with flecks looks better than the solid color. The company I used is called Miracle Method, but I am sure there are others. No ripping out of old tile. They can also add bullnose edging before spraying to give a more modern look to your counters. I highly reccommend it.

We just finished tiling straight over previous floor tiles. Looks great. If your tiles are very shiny give them a sand with very course sandpaper before laying the new ones over top.

We did our kitchen floor about a year and a half ago, it was so successful we have just finished doing the rest of the downstairs, including our dining room, bathroom and laundry room. I'm so happy with it. The tiles have to be solid underneath, so we redid a few that were a bit wobbly. Then went ahead. We went from 6 in tiles to 12 in tiles so the joints are different. We've had no problems with the kitchen.

You can, also, put in a floating floor of some kind. They have some that look like tile.
