Re: massive tree roots

I had 2 smaller trees in my front yard cut down and will have stumps removed in the spring. I need to get rid of the big roots all over my small front yard. You can't really see them but feel them when you walk through the yard. Will they eventually just die out or is there some way of removing them?

  • If those are the roots to the trees you had taken down, then the roots will eventually decompose. You can try to dig them out but if they are not on top of the ground, then I would just leave them. Organic material when they decompose will be good for the yard or garden. If you want to plant something when you hit a root, then use a saw (I often use my reciprocating saw) to cut out the root. It takes years for the decay but the roots will not grow anything but maybe some fungi
  • Once tree is removed the roots will die out. The stump removing company can grind any roots that you feel as you walk around quickly. Once done they always tend to leave the chips behind, you can use them as compost elsewhere. Remove the chips and put down some fresh topsoil and seed.
