Paint or leave it alone?

Mid Century is popular but it is getting more popular to paint.
We have done well buying and selling Mid Century. It now it appears the new buyers like it painted or that is what it appears. Would you paint this beautiful piece of Mid Century?

I had almost the same piece and I ended up stripping the drawers and restaining and painting the body white.

If painted is the desired trend, you have to do what you must to sell. These pieces are great in black with oriental knobs with back plates attached....that way the fingernails do not scratch off paint.

Before you decide, check out the prices that MidCentury furniture is bringing these days. One of my favorite sites is MagicCityFinds.com but you may find good examples on ebay too. If you paint it, it won't be desirable to collectors of this era of furniture, but it may appeal to others simply because it's a decorative storage piece.

I bought a Nathan dresser with the intention of painting it white, but it was way to good.. A couple of rubs with teak oil brought out its full beauty..

Whether to keep or sell, the genius that resides in each of us will come out when you visualize the piece in all the possible finishes you see for it. Contrasting the body with the drawers will bring attention to the angularity of it and will accent the lines rather than the piece as a whole.I like to imagine a piece in use, seeing around it and the other furniture in the room. When it feels right and speaks to you. You will have found your answer.

My husband has a nearly identical dresser, and we both love it. I wouldn't paint this dresser unless the finish needs to be covered due to damage. I think painted furniture looks less high-end than a wood finish in good condition. Consequently, I am not willing to pay as much for painted furniture.

It looks like walnut veneer on the drawers (although I cannot zoom closely enough to be sure). I would strip and oil the drawer fronts, oil the drawers on the inside as well, and bring attention to this beautifully-revived walnut grain with the new white chic: matte black shell and legs. I own a wonderful Cadovius walnut unit and various oiled mid-century designer pieces, and I would still mix it up with this very classy dresser: http://relovehalifax.com/2013/11/24/upcycled-mid-century-dresser-160/

Paint it with some bright color or an antiqued metallic color
