    I was a professional faux finisher. I would paint the whole area the grout color then apply 1/4" tape in my selected pattern. Go back over the whole area with a light coat of the grout color to seal the tape edges. then apply the color you want the tile to be.. You can shade the tiles with a little darker color around the edges, then pull the tape off and Voila, you have a beautiful tile back splash.

    I like the look of tile but really hate grout and grout cleaning so I always say no to tiles. This is genius. I can have the look I like without the expense and cleaning! You are so clever! Thanks for the lesson on how you did this.
