Any ideas on what chalk paint color to use on this or any thoughts on what design style ..would I sand it first where there are some scratches?

I would sand the entire thing after you take off the hardware and fill in deep scratches with wood filler if you want a finished look before painting. A teal or gray might be nice.
  • I would recommend you patch the holes with wood filler, then a light sanding-- normally with chalk paint you don't have to sand at all but I always like to anyway just to make sure it's got a good surface for the paint to grip. A light color of paint might be nice, it's a pretty heavy piece on its' own so something that could soften it up might be good. :)

Hi Linda! If you are planning on a rustic, distressed look, then I wouldn't bother sanding it and filling the holes-just clean it up. Looks better once you paint with the chalk paint and sand it if there are cracks and missing veneer. As far as the color goes, that truly depends on what room you are putting it in. Black is elegant, white is pretty, red is bold. If it's for resale, then I usually go safe with Annie Sloan Old White or Linen Gray-both are great neutrals. In either case, I would paint right over those handles and wipe off to get rid of the dated brass look.

Check the back of one of the drawer fronts ......you should be able to tell what kind of wood it is.I am concerned there might be an antique finish on the desk if so you can either strip it [ but if the actual wood isn't to your taste] then get a primer that is recommended for varnish or paint. Personally I would not worry about the dings and go with a well loved elegance or use extra bright color and go for a " can't miss it look'

I had a similar desk that I painted. The top was done in Graphite. The base was given a coat of shellac and then painted in Old White. Duck Egg Blue was added over the Old White on the panels. Good luck with your project! I hope you share the "after" photos! http://theblacksheepshoppe.blogspot.com/2014/11/antique-twin-pedestal-desk.html
