A window delimma

I was trying to be creative with these boards by my window. But I feel it still needs something. Ideas anyone?

Tina, I think it needs some kind of topper whether it be an architectural piece hanging above the window or some kind of valance. The board on either side of the window accentuate the top line of the window instead of softening it.

What if you hung smaller canvases above the ones you already have. Maybe you could find a fabric that you like cover the canvases and add to what you have.

Do you rent or own your home? The window has no trim which make it look bare. I would trim out the windows with molding to make them look finished. That would cozy things up and give some architectural detail to your home.

Thank you all. Yes I own the home. I will try to trim the window. And maybe add a burlap type fabric to the top.

All my windows have blinds only, I dress them up with cornises. Paint a color that matches the room and they look so different.

I think a fabric accent is needed to soften it up a bit. Something up the sides then hanging down a bit along the top and then back down the other side. I think burlap would be a bit too rustic...perhaps you you pick up some colors from other items in the room

I agree with Karen and Elizabeth - the window needs a topper of some kind. Another idea is to place some greenery underneath - perhaps matching cornices - one over the window, and one long, inverted one with 'planted' greenery running underneath all three to tie it together...easy to make!

I think a Shelf, dark like the side pieces across the top of the window or across the side pieces also. What you put on the shelf could give you height and if it trailed over the front a 'topper' or cornice.

You can try an older style casing like the attached or maybe just do the header piece across the window and panels

What is the view out the window? If you put a shelf over the window that had a bit of an edge to hold things on the shelf you could change the things on the shelf with the seasons, now for Christmas some tiny toys, Christmas balls, battery candles etc etc, tiny pumpkins and some dry stuff in the fall, some delicate china for Easter or some garage sale colorful plates, or just some things you have around that go well together and look good over the window, I collect antique pitchers, they would look great over the window on a dark stained shelf. You can get inexpensive unstained shelves in any of the craft stores i bought one for my sister to use to display an antique platter. You can then stain it to match your signs on either side. the shelf is the best idea I feel because you do not have to deal with fabric and you get to change it all the time and really have some fun with it in your decor.

Wow what great ideas you all have given me. Craig, beautiful photos. I love the trim, so rich looking. Ann my view out of the window is of my patio. For now I just have Christmas balls hung from ribbons for the holidays. After the holdidays I will put the ideas everyone has given me into action.

The first thing that popped into my head was a decorative rod across the lenth of all 3 spaces, the window and the 2 boards, then add in a window scarf (which are cool because it is so easy to change it out to the seasons or color themes) and add in a garland of some sort. Twiggy floral, leaves, flowers, cones etc. Another option instead of a decorative rod, is to find an object that will serve the same purpose. A fishing rod, a natural branch, a canoe oar, a long handled garden implement, bamboo, etc. I know of a little seaside restaurant that uses fishing rods to hang their valances from. If you use a branch that is not super straight, you can hang it out a few inches from the wall and can hang other decoraitve items from it. I have a medium sized twisted branch hanging from my ceiling in front of my large picture window. I hang small sun catcher type things on it most of the year (helps with keeping birds from flying into my window) and then display my collection of snowflakes and icicles from it in winter. Happy decorating!

Trim the window with decorative moulding and it will look amazing. Cute idea with the shudders.

I would change out the blinds for a fabric roman shade (there are awesome DIY tips for how to turn a mini blind into a roman shade - google it) and maybe paint a decorative trim around the window in lieu of molding. Why not keep the artsy vibe going? I would also add some chunky metal hinges (even if they aren't actually functioning) to the insides of the 'shutters' for added interest & to make them really stand out as purposeful. Add some hardware ! Hinges and pulls, and some sort of latch to make them look like storm shutters.
