Painting an older bathroom vanity

I want to give my bathroom an updated look without spending a lot of money. I would like to paint the vanity white and add new faucets and vanity light. Do you need to sand the vanity first? It's in great shape. What type of paint? Flat, satin, etc.?

Unless you are using chalk paint, which doesn't require any prep other than a clean surface, you should sand and prime the wood. If using chalk paint, be sure to finish with a wax coat to protect the painted surface from water and scratches. Good luck!

I would recommend if using chalk paint, not to use wax in a bathroom. I would use a poly type of finish. Most chalk paint suppliers have some kind of non-toxic or low toxic finish coat product. I used AFM Polyureseal over chalk paint on my cabinets. You might get away with wax in a powder room, but the poly coat is quick, easy, and more durable.

Yes, you need to sand and follow with one or two coats of primer. If there are any dents or imperfections in the wood, you can fill them with spackle at this time, too.
