Do you know what this is?

Looks vintage. Cheesecloth fabric and it is collapsible. Trying to help a friend. I don't know any dimensions at the moment.

Is it a vintage Oriental lantern?

My guess is that it is used to dry and/or maintain the shape of a wig or a hat, perhaps to be used in a hatbox. I think if you used this as a lantern it would destroy the fabric.

Could be a screen for a carriage (good catch, Cous!). I've also used something similar to allow baked goods to cool in a bug-free environment.

It's to cover food during an outdoor picnic, maybe. I have something similar, but not so small at the bottom. It looks like a parasol.

I agree with Linda. Us Texans like to have barbeques often. I have several outdoor food covers used for keeping the bugs off. They're different styles, but same general principal...'airy' material, made to shape like a dome, and collapsible.

Hanging lanterns are made from different types of materials. Not always used with lights, but just as hanging ornament decoration like a Christmas globe. Finer quality lanterns are made with better materials, such as harder wood or steel for the frames and woven cloth like linen and silks instead of paper and bamboo. They are made to be able to fold flat for storage, since they are mostly used for decoration purposes during festivals.

Pretty sure it is not any kind of device to keep insects away from food. When open, it looks like there is a huge gap at the top and bottom. Not good for keeping bugs away. I am curious as to why it has the center poles bent outward and not just having 1 pole go from top to bottom. like that was done on purpose, like something goes in the center from top to bottom.
