How to paint or upgrade a brick fireplace

There has been many posts regarding painting a brick fireplace. I would suggest however before you consider that un-reversible idea, to post a few photos of your current fireplace and the wall surrounding it. While some older fireplace walls could be improved with paint, most do not need that and only need some improvements surrounding it. I am old school, and old, lol. I really do not like when stone or bricks are painted. Not only does it take away the beauty of the material, it can take away some value. So post some photos and I am sure many will give you lots of great suggestions on how to improve this space. Besides were all nosy and want to see what you have. :)

I agree with Woodbridge, I want to see photos! With that said, do you still use your fireplace? You have to be carefully about the type of paint you use. It will have to be heat resistant. You can also use other materials than paint to dress up your fireplace (but make sure whatever you do is up to code if you burn wood) Here's a really fun blogger roundup of fireplace makeovers: http://goo.gl/vr4KFp

I think it's a marvelous idea. In England I had a red brick and black mortar fireplace with a saltillo tile (red) with black grout raised hearth. I hated it. I painted the walls a beautiful camel color and painted the fireplace ivory (just be sure to use masonry paint). I transformed the hearth using small tumbled marble tiles. It was hard to recognize it as the same fireplace. (BTW, with only $17K invested in upgrades and tons of elbow grease, I sold the house for over twice as much as I paid for it, so I must have been doing something right.......other than buying and selling at the right times, of course).

I never have liked painted brick so we covered ours with sheetrock and used texture paint
