About Me:

I have done many projects over 30 years of home ownership related to plumbing, painting, electrical, gardening, yard maintenance, applicance repair and replacement, carpet replacement and many more. Also repaired many bikes. I also worked at Home Depot Expo Design Center in Lighting/Electrical, wired lights, hung ceiling fans and many more related projects. Also helped designers choose selections and lighting effects. Worked as asistant Blg Mgr at Ft McPherson. We rennovated a 110 yr old hospital into office space.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I always enjoy working outdoors in the yard. But there's great satisfaction in any home improvement project done well.

There are areas of protection that every homeowner should address when it comes to their wood ...»
deck. The most commonly known area is water damage. When it comes to protecting your deck, water is the #1 culprit that will damage your investment. Get a sealant.

why do projects fail ?

? ? for us who do the work for a living, failure is usually due to inexperience w/new materials/method,,, for the average diy'er, improper/inadequate preparation leads the list,,, it ...»
also likely the diy'er will select wrong/inadequate/not enough material for the task at hand,,, primarily his/her decision is governed by what the local apron/vest store sells, has in stock, was recommended by the nice man, how much the product costs, & cost of necessary tools - NONE of this means diy'ers can't/won't complete the task to satisfaction/pro level - just do it like a pro & you'll get pro results !

Painting: I'm removing the wallpaper from my kitchen walls and I'm going to put a backsplash in above the counter and paint the

remainder. What should I do to prepare the walls in advance, in both cases?

Good advice from Dan and Yamani. Seems like a lot of prep work, but you will be glad you did ...»
when you see the excellent results.

I would think it would be OK in the country, not OK in the city. If you live at the Lithonia ...»
jail it would be proper, you might even consider razor wire.

Sounds like water may be getting to your paint. Make sure yor storm door is insulated water ...»
tight. Seems like paint would easily come off a threshold from foot traffic. Ever thought about just an alumininum or unpainted surface for a threshold?

Not sure what medium size is but you could try spackle and paint then go with the tape and mud ...»
if it doesn't work. I am a homeowner not a pro, so I try to do things cheaply and simply.
