About Me:

I have done many projects over 30 years of home ownership related to plumbing, painting, electrical, gardening, yard maintenance, applicance repair and replacement, carpet replacement and many more. Also repaired many bikes. I also worked at Home Depot Expo Design Center in Lighting/Electrical, wired lights, hung ceiling fans and many more related projects. Also helped designers choose selections and lighting effects. Worked as asistant Blg Mgr at Ft McPherson. We rennovated a 110 yr old hospital into office space.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I always enjoy working outdoors in the yard. But there's great satisfaction in any home improvement project done well.

Gardening: The common area outside my door has hoses that apparently are useless for irrigation or anything else.

I'd like to be able to rip them out and put in drought-tolerant ground cover, but don't know where to start. Pure sand is soil.

Odd that the hoses are there for no reason. Maybe a some point they were used then ...»
disconnected. I like the river rock and stepping stone idea. I like smaller rocks (like pea gravel) and stepping stones too.

Interesting point made by Walter. Night-time heat seems to be a real culprit. The question ...»
is is it any different now than in past years?

Outdoor Living: I'm converting a 12'X14' deck, floor joists are 2"x12"s on 12" centers to a sunroom, I'm adding roof and walls,

including windows & screens. This deck is a coming off the second story of the home. My question is, they have 3 4x4's supporting it on the very front and 2 4x4's midway back toward the ...»
house. The concrete pylons that support the 4x4 uprights are 8" diameter and they are not sure how deep they are plus it's a new home built on a landfill. I'm worried when I add the roof and walls this thing could settle like crazy, what can I do to prevent this without breaking their bank.

Thanks

Gardening: I live in a 1930's Arts & Crafts bungalow that has a small window in the attic on the front of the house.

I thought it would look nice if I put a light behind the window to show off the colored panes. After much deliberation and execution, I decided to hang a 100 watt "squiggly" light bulb ...»
from the rafters in the attic about 6 feet from the window. I was most disappointed with the results. In daytime, it looked the same and, at night, there is only a very bright, off center, circle of light. The periphery of the window is obscure.

I thought of putting in a brighter spot light but was afraid of too much heat causing a fire.

Anybody have a suggestion as to how I can make my window glow like the stained glass windows in churches?

I don't think brighter is the answer. I would place the light underneath or above the stain ...»
glass so that the spot doesn't show. Maybe try a flourescent bulb or low wattage. You want to highlight the colors gently, not signal that the British are coming.

Put the pole high away from trees etc. I have used those sticky spiral fly baits that hang ...»
from the ceiling around the pole. The squirrels don't like the sticky glue. Put human hair on the glue, squirrels also hate human hair on them. But when all is said and done, the squirrels are probably smarter than we are and will find a way.

Once, you notice termite infestation in your house, the first task is to identify the specific ...»
type of termite in your house. There are many types, like, drywood, subterranean, Formosan, etc. The most common types of termites that cause damage to man-made constructions are drywood and subterranean ones. However Formosan termites are also found in southern United States. The identification of the termite type is important, as the termite treatment measures vary with the different types.

The benefit of a professional is the termite bond which will protect you if treatment fails.
