About Me:

I am a wife, mom, teacher, painter, reader, writer, decorator, and doxie owner....but not always in that order.

Favorite area of home improvement:

Interiors that look beautiful but function sensibly!

Recent Activity

  • Before: The cabinet was narrow and it was difficult to get pots & pans in and out...
  • First he removed the shelf....
  • Added rails...
  • Built this box "thingy"....
  • Now it slides out....
  • and back in...
  • The only piece he added to the cabinets was the center strip of wood to hide the middle strip that he removed. 1

Making a kitchen cabinet more functional...

Handy hubby worked some magic on this cabinet so that I could get to all of our pots & pans easily.

DIY Ballard Designs Headboard

This headboard sells for over $600 on Ballard Designs website, but we made one ourselves for only $75 in wood (and a little birdy!) Visit our blog to see how we did it!

Inexpensive options for beautiful Countertops!

It doesn't always need to be expensive!

I wanted to give a few examples of inexpensive options for beautiful countertops. ...»

Here are three that we have done recently.

The first is a reclaimed top that was on its way to the dump. We refinished it and added it to an antique dresser base to make an island in our kitchen.

The second option is high gloss Laminate... by using a squared off edge instead of the rounded edge we were able to get an appearance more like granite. The example I am showing is also from our kitchen.

Option three is porcelain floor tile.

I recently redid my parents kitchen and used 12"x24" floor tiles for countertop. The surface must be prepped properly and be level. It turned out beautifully. Using large tiles minimizes grout lines. I used a grout very close to the tile colour. We only needed 16 tiles for the whole project.

  • At least it looked nice and neat with the door closed! 1
  • Such a disaster... we couldn't find anything in the jumbled mess, and heaven forbid it was at the back!
  • So you empty first, and knock those shelves out! 1
  • It was small closet sized, we repaired any wall damaged and painted. the strips are from the wood they used to hold the former shelves up.
  • My production line for painting. 8
  • I used a left over Behr semi-gloss for the first 2 coats. But finished it off with a nice coat of gloss.
  • You can see the aluminum channel he used to hold the shelves. Smart hubby. 1
  • I can see everything! We did add one more shelf up high a little later. And the bottom shelf is about 8 inches from the floor, so I can clean! 5
  • Everything has a place. So nice. No more digging around to find things. 10

Pantry Remodel!

The standard pantries in the house we bought last year were almost unusable. Long deep shelves and only 3-4 of them in a large closet sized area. Thank heavens they had doors. I designed ...»
the shelves, my husband cut them out of MDF boards, I painted them with several coats of paint, and he installed them with aluminum channel. The channel allowed use of the shelf all the way to the back of the space. I counted and measured all the things in my food pantry to make the plan for how many shelves, how wide, tall and deep they needed to be. See the beginning and end result. It's so nice to be able to find things now. It turned out so nice, we did the 2nd pantry where I keep dishes, plastics, and mixed items for the kitchen!
