  • Consider what it carried. I collect pallet wood from a firetruck manufacture. While this cannot guarantee clean wood, it's safer than if it had carried pesticides.
  • How is it treated? HT means heat treated which is safer than chemically treated. Watch for markings on the wood. Avoid any wood that is extremely heavy, stained or has an odour.
  • How to dismantle pallets? It isn't easy! Most nails are twisted and hard to remove but that isn't to say it's impossible. A good crowbar and hammer can do quite nicely but I attempt to find loose wood when possible.
  • Remove the nails asap. Dismantled pallets are FULL of them making them very dangerous. Don't delay this step for safety's sake.
  • There is no guarantee that the wood you are using is clean. Avoid reclaimed lumber in the vegetable garden, where food is served and for children's toys. If in doubt, use new wood.
  • There are even more tips on the original blog post. http://www.funkyjunkinteriors.net/2011/04/all-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about.html

worse, make the wood "jump" opening me up to injury. I tend to only use new pallets, so do not think the ick is as much a problem. Heck, for $3? Great buy!

Washing Windows Like The Pros

I cannot take credit for this discovery; however I can tell you that it works! In my opinion this is the best way for washing windows. A cleaning company shared this tip with me four ...»
years ago, I was using glass cleaner, vinegar and newspapers. Nothing I did completely cleaned the window. This is the only thing I use now.

Items Needed for Washing Windows

(All items except the Dawn were purchased at Dollar Tree)

Dawn Dish Detergent

Small Bowl or Bucket

Scrubby Pads

Absorbent Cloths

Squeegee

Steps

1. Place a few drops of Dawn in your container with a couple inches of water.

2. Dip the scrubby pad into the water and squeeze out.

3. Scrub the glass. The Dawn along with the scrubby gets the dirt off and does not leave a residue.

4. Squeegee the window, starting at the top and working down, wiping off the "blade" each time with a cloth.

5. Wipe around the edges to absorb any leftover water and dirt.

Who would have known this is all it takes to get professional results? Give it a try and see if you like the Washing Windows like The pros. http://chaoticallycreative.com/2012/03/16/wa...

  • This is the one in the living room area. When they are on at night they fill the walls with these gorgeous shades!
  • This is above our dinning table! It has three bases and from each one hang 7 black circles and 3 round crystals. Cleaning them is not fun! To get all the decorations down and hang them again i need about 3 hours!
  • And the one in the living room. This one has 5 bases. Again with 7 black circles and 3 round crystals! During day when the sun comes there are rainbows on the wall because of the crystals!

Our living room lighting fixtures

In a previous post you could see a bit from our lights in our living and my friend Bernice asked me to get a closer a look at them. So here they are!

The Kitchen Clutter Magnet: The Junk Drawer

When I’m designing kitchens for my clients, we always talk about storage needs and storage solutions. And usually, the talk turns to their junk drawer…how large should it be? Today ...»
I invite you to take a look at your own kitchen junk drawer. What goodies do you find there? When was the last time you really took a good look at the contents?

Tips for quick junk drawer organization:

1. Group similar items together and seal in a small plastic zip snack bag. Then label the bag .

2. Purchase drawer dividers and label each section. Not only will this help you get organized, but it lets you see all the contents at once…so no more guessing and no more losing.

Design & Décor: What would you do with this awkward nook?

I have a very large master bedroom (20x25) but I have this awkward corner with windows that I can't figure out what to do with. Currently we have the bed with the headboard against the wall on the right side of the photo. We could move it elsewhere in the room, but this is the nicest location for privacy reasons.

I considered building in a window seat, but it is just too small. The space is only about 3 feet wide. I am even struggling to figure out a window treatment ...»

since the edge of the window is right against the closet wall. I also considered ripping out the closet and eliminating the niche, but there isn't really a place to put in a new closet.

Any ideas?

Getting Rid of that "Boy Bathroom Smell"

Ask Anna explains how using 3 household ingredients can get rid of that smell that mysteriously appears in a boys bathroom. Here is the readers question: Our front bathroom is pretty much used by our 2 boys. My problem is that I cannot get rid of the "boy bathroom smell." I scrubbed the bathroom last week, and have made a point to wipe things down and have them do it as well. I even replaced the toilet seats. It makes me want to go in there with a pressure washer full of bleach! Any ...»
suggestions on how to get rid of the smell?? I always worry guests can smell it too unless I turn the wax burner on.

Check out Ask Anna for the full answer for a fresh smelling bathroom!

I agree about the wiping of the walls, and I also undo the toilet seat caps and scrub under there with a toothbrush.
