About Me:

RN at Emory Hospital, gardener, mother, wife and when i get the time potter, wheelthrown, not magic. My husband works on airplanes but still manages to do parts of his honey-do list ...in spurts. We built a 30 ft x 8 x 8 deck/arbor off the pool in July/Aug.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I've landscaped the yard using what knowledge i gather from an 18mth degree back in the mid 70's. I go between front back and side yards with projects. Id like more of a presence with this old ranch, i was leaning toward a Tuscan feel.Curbside as well as poolside! always more to do outside, but our master bath is terribly outdated, kitchen could use help as well. I am so ready to paint inside and out too! conclusion: all areas are my favorite areas of home improvement!

Recent Activity

  • I recently completed a deck garden makeover for the Home & Family Show on Hallmark Channel. Although, a TV project, this is a landscape design anyone can implement at home. 2
  • This is the "before" photo of the deck I was assigned to beautify.
  • I had two narrow planting strips like this to create a dynamic garden. I was able to do it by planting in containers, recessed into these areas.
  • After photo: Shutters were painted, window box added along with planting towers and drop-in containers full of plants. See my blog post at Garden Center TV for more photos and details!

Deck Garden Makeover With Drought Tolerant Plants!

I was assigned a deck garden makeover recently for the Hallmark daytime show, "Home & Family" with Cristina Ferrare and Mark Steines. ...»

If you like home and garden shows, you'll love this unique daytime show where all the guests are experts from this genre!

When I design a garden makeover for television, one of the first things I do is secure the very best looking plants available.

This is TV after all!

The Planting Conditions

The deck is open and sunny and has a southern orientation, meaning it receives generous sunshine most of the day.

Read the rest and see tons of photos on my Garden Center TV blog where I name plant varieties, garden accessories and prices!:

Rustic Coffee Table

My favorite table. Labor of love. After weeks of work and the help of my wonderful husband made this table out of many different types of wood rounds.

Garden Salvage

I took an old door and coated the glass with mirror paint, then I mounted it on my fence. I added some porch poles and bunk bed slats as a frame around the door; decorating it with paint ...»
and flower pot finials. I added a decorative piece of steel as a topper and put some stepping stones in front of it. This is my "secret" door to nowhere.

Outdoor Living: I need an application for large permanent sunroom windows. I've heard of a solar fabric screening material.Phifer Co. ?

Does anyone have any experience with this or a similar product? I was told you are able to make your own screens, as this product is not applied to the glass.

Bought house with this I believe porch turned sunroom addition which is on a slab attached to ...»
the ranch house. It faces due east with windows all around even two windowed doors. I love it but now that we took out trees for better pool upkeep/ exposure we have loads more sun. An arbor would block the view, an awning has a tight fit in the space between overhang and window tops...thanks I'm going to give it a try with this product as I feel it's a great fit for now while we continue to evolve the space( backyard with renovated pool area). HD sells it but I plan to order straight from Phifer.

  • The sink is the original one from the kitchen in the house, salvaged from the cellar. 18
  • The shelf is a $3 thrift store find. 6
  • The door knob plates from the old door. 1
  • The other plate. 1
  • A couple of clearanced hooks from Hobby Lobby. 1
  • I installed wire mesh into the window space and added this cross section so I would have a place to mount an old rake head for a tool rack. 2
  • The bench is in heavy use already. 12

Potting Bench

When we replaced the old front door on our 100 year old home, I couldn't bring myself to throw the old one away. This is how we transformed it into a potting bench with repurposed lumber ...»
and few new bits and pieces.
