Before you go and spend money on all new cabinets, consider just getting new doors and hardware. Or you could resurface the cabinets or if you're feeling extra motivated, you could sand and stain them a darker or lighter color. But definitely replace the hardware - it seems rather dated to me. Just my two cents...

    I would just paint them.

Agree with Elizabeth. I'd paint them after filling the grooves.

I would distress it using chalk paint. Very little sanding needed. You would have to google to see who carries it in your area.

@Nietta George Make your own...works just as well and saves a boat load of money specially for painting cabinets. Seal not with wax, but poly..

Thanks all! Any thoughts on painting everything vs just the doors vs just that middle? Was thinking possibly painting the black outline and the inside a brownish red / rust color. And totally planning on updating the hardware!!!

You could also use some nice wider molding and make a frame with mitered corners and attach to the doors to cover the grooves. Then chalk paint, distress and new hardware. They will look great! The framing gives dimension and they will look like totally different.

You didn't say what your budget was, but painting the cabinets would be the least expensive option and would make a big impact. I would also replace the hardware before you paint so you can patch holes if you need to.

Hi! Your new floor is really nice and rustic-love it. I would not fill in the grooves of the cabinet doors, that is what gives them interest. Since the countertops are white and the appliances are black, why not paint them a light gray color that complements that slate gray floor tile color? Otherwise I would stick to creamy white paint because you already have a lot of tan and brown neutrals in the room with the floor and wall colors. Change out the hardware to a chrome or stainless. Inexpensive DIY tip: since those hinges are hidden, you can easily spray them with matching metallic spray paint rather than replacing all of them. Then perhaps add a backsplash with grays and tans and and glass to add a little "bling". Like this one: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Merola-Tile-Tessera-Piano-York-11-3-4-in-x-11-3-4-in-x-8-mm-Stone-and-Glass-Mosaic-Wall-Tile-GDMTPNY/202719584 Before you decide to paint just the insides a dark color and outlining the lines in black, I would take some dark red construction paper and make a test panel and tape it to the door. You will see that it will create a "chopped-up" look because of the repeated contrast from dark to light, not only on the doors but with the appliances as well. It will also detract from the floor because your eye will be drawn to the dark cabinets. Good luck! Make sure you post an "after" pic!

I do love your floor! Painting your cabinets would be the biggest bang for your buck. New hardware would be wonderful, but it can turn into quite an expense. Krylon makes a great oil rubbed bronze spray paint, that would make these pop against a nice neutral paint. Your walls seem to blend quite nicely. I would select the lightest shade in your tile and paint your cabinets that color. Looks to me like you would still have a great contrast between your counters and cabinets.

I certainly would not highlight the 70's-80's design on the doors if you are trying to update them. By painting them you are just attracting more attention to them and you want them to disappear.

I went to Amazon looking for my knobs and pulls. I was getting quite scared as it was going to cost me so much for the hardware. I really lucked out..Amazon had what I wanted in bulk..I got 25 knobs for 25.00 and 25 pulls for 28.00, so all my hardware for 53.00. They are brushed nickle which is what I am using in my kitchen. My cabinets are old, in bad repair and just can not be used..so I got new ones..but the pulls and knobs are the bling to your kitchen and really can make old cabinets get that sparkle back.

Your floor is beautiful! With a textured, multi-colored floor, I'd paint the cabinet boxes and doors one color. Keep all eyes on the beautiful tile. I'd paint the cabinets and doors a creamy color like Benjamin Moore's Natural Cream, and I'd replace the hardware with something sleek and current. By painting it all one color, you'll make the dated design almost disappear. If your budget is higher, I'd replace the doors with Shaker style doors and have it all professionally painted cream. Also, I'd put white wood blinds or bamboo blinds on the windows for privacy and replace the valance with floor-length panels. But I'm pretty weird about having 100% privacy in my house, so feel free to take that last part with a grain of salt. :) Is that a bathroom light fixture over the kitchen sink?

I did mine with chalk paint, no sanding, no priming... loved the way they turned out. I only did my uppers but eventually may do the lowers too.

I also have multicolored slate and black appliances inmy kitchen. Without knowing your decor style of your house, I would suggest a medium grey chalk paint, aged with "aging wax" concentrating on darkening the edges of your cabinets and change your cabinet pulls. The design of your cabinet doors won't be an issue, so save money there, invest in some whimsical pulls on your center island if you have one, or the pulls at eye level, like on upper cabinets with simpler lower cost pulls that coordinate in color and finish to your whimsical ones. Add a few colorful accessories that are also functional in cobalt blue or red or copper, depending on the decor in the rest of your house. Keep the accessories to a minimum. I have added a copper pot rack with copper pots and pans in my kitchen. It goes beautifully with the slate floors.

Thanks for all the comments. Still planning on updating the valance and getting a new counter and faucet but since I posted about painting I thought I'd post a pic with how it turned out
