No hall closet

Susan Davis
by Susan Davis
The house that we are thinking of purchasing has no coat closet in the entryway. That is weird to me and I'm having a hard time getting past that. Any thoughts on where to put coats? I really like the house otherwise.

Personally, this would be a deal breaker for me. I couldn't live without a coat closet especially in our climate when there are numerous parkas, coats, scarves, boots, etc. You could use wall hooks/hall tree and a boot tray but personally I think this makes the entry look perpetually cluttered and messy. Without having a diagram of your layout, it is difficult to see if you could take space from a living area to get one installed..

How about a coat rack? If the house has a mud room, you could put coats there too.

I don't know the layout of your house but I have a similar problem in the house I've just bought. My plan is to create a utility/cloakroom out of part of the integral garage. So this means it will be off the kitchen but I can live with this. I am also taking the opportunity to have the builders put in an extra toilet. But, if this isn't an option Ikea have a really slimline brushed steel free standing coat rack that I would recommend.

It was something that I didn't think about when I purchased my home a decade back, but it's now a decision I regret. I have thought of a way to incorporate one into my home, but the question is where? My bedroom closets are way to full to even think of trying to add a few coats in there. The laundry room doesn't have a place either. Unless I remodel a wall and can move my living room around there is no place to add one. I have thought of a coat rack on the wall, but there is no room even for that!

there are a ton of shelf type hanging racks in every decor imaginable; just do a 'google search'

One of my friends found a portion of wall and put good hooks on it, shoes and boots underneath. It was in the middle right by the front door, but actually worked well because it was right where you could use it, but not where you are looking when sitting and talking.
