Repairing leather chairs

Some of the finish on medium blue leather chairs has worn off. How can I repair them.

I read where someone used shoe polish in the same color as the leather to restore it. I haven't tried it, though.

I asked the owner of a shoe repair business about using shoe polish on my husbands leather recliner and he told me it would not work but only rub off over time. Still not sold on the idea that it couldn't be used as a short term fix but it is going to be hard to match.
