Western exposure for porch planting

I have a front porch with an aluminum rail across the front. My neighbor up the street has same. I face WEST and she faces EAST so she is shaded in the summer of course mine opposite. I want to do container planting like hers. But I'm afraid the afternoon sun inThe summer will be too hot. We live in Chula Vista, Ca. Where the temps stay around the mid 70's in the summer. Any suggestions on plants that could live in those conditions? Thanks.
