How do I paint the glass panel so that it looks like stained glass and not so see-through?

What a beautiful door panel! I am not quite sure what you are attempting to do, but I am thinking that you just want the glass to have some sort of clear coating (not colored) to allow light but not see through. I would just say that I would choose something that wasn't necessarily permanent but could be removed later. There are a couple of options: you can get frosted paints (either spray or paint on) that don't actually etch the glass, it just adds a frosted coating to the back of the glass. Martha Stewart makes a very nice one that paints on easily and doesn't streak. Or, you could get some peel and stick vinyl in a frosted or bubble look to again block the view but allow the light to shine through.

Gallery Glass ! they sell it at craft stores or you can go online at their web site, And if you don't like it you can take it off with a razor once it dries, I do believe you can get the rubber strips in white, I have only used black, makes it look like leaded stain glass but I have done sooo many window with this paint and never had a problem, but you dont use paint strokes on the glass, you use short strokes and when the paint dries it has a texted look. the more layers you put on the richer the color, but you have to let each layer died before appling the next.

What about using a vinyl cling product to give the door the look you want. Just do search for stained glass window film.

I have used both the Gallery glass paint and the window film (Lowes. Home Depot) and both work good. Film is a bit easier.

there are some paints that you can use that are made to look like stained glass.. I frosted a door upper glass in my old house several years ago..turned out well.. I am NOT the greatest at freehand detail paint... 
 Check around at Hobby Lobby or Michaels craft stores one of those should have it.

There are etching products out there that work very well, but they are definitely permanant. For something that you can change your mind later if you want a different look, use lay-on film, or acrilic paint that can be scraped off at any time. If you're looking for a specific design to add to the one that's already there and you're not great a freehand drawing, make sure you get a stick on stencil so the etching product (or paint) doesn't ooze beyond the lines. Any hobby and craft store will have what you are looking for; you might even check with a car detailing shop to see what products they use for auto design.

We had the same problem when we moved into our house ten years ago. We used Wallpaper for Windows, frosted. At the time, one could buy this brand at Home Depot but our store only had the decorative patterns, including etched, which we didn't want. I don't know if HD still even carries the WfW brand, but here's the website: http://www.wallpaperforwindows.com/pc/Frosted-Window-Film-c45.htm As I said, it's been ten years and we've never had a problem. It still looks good, is still adhered, and I have faith that it would be just as easy to remove if we ever wanted to do so. It did exactly what we wanted, obscured the view inside the house. (Of course, it obscured our view outside as well, something we've adjusted to.) We did use it in another application--too involved to go into here--and removed a portion of it, which had only been on a few months but the removal was relatively easy. Not easy peasy, just relatively so. ;^)

The easiest way, because I had to do the same thing with a very similar door, is to have them order you a new window. Just remove the oval part and put in new non-seethrough window. Done!

I would go with window film, so you can remove it later if you change your mind. Home Depot carries several designs or you can look online. Good luck. Please post pictures of what you decide.

a cheap idea but not for privacy,dip a oval shape of lace(same size as the window in liquid starch and 'wallpaper' the window to dress it up.trim any edges with scissors.Can peel right off whenever you want to replace easily.Can purchase starch at Walmart in a bottle in the laundry isle.

you can buy spray paint made for that. I use it on my bathroom lower window. I think it's called haze. either way check Home depot or Lowes, even walmart may have it. craft stores too.

I use the spray product available at Lowes.  It works great!  It'such a shame that you need  to do anything with such a beautiful design, but I know.... I did, too.  Mine has been on my door for 9 years now and I haven't had to do anything but wash it lightly.

Craft supply stores, will have something you can do to add privacy, ask the staff, they are to help. Cheapest privacy method would be spray with water and fit with bubble wrap, I know, I did it to insulate the door and my basement windows, allows light but you can't see through them. Glass Gallery is a liquid that you paint on the glass, frosted type will solve privacy issues. It is easy to remove if ever needed. Search 'film for glass', I'd stay away from the contact type, just because it is a hassle to remove. I used a film for glass in my bathroom, you spray glass with water and smooth film on glass, it is easily pulled off if desired, Also, Elmer's white glue and food coloring is another method, apply with brush or a gloved hand. It can be scrapped of with a razor knife. Be careful not to get on painted surfaces because it will stain it. I get many ideas from the Pinterest site.

You could take some acrylic paint and using the lines of the design simply color in the design. If you don't like it it will come off with some serious scrubbing. Or use glass paint if you want a more permanent thing.

there is a contact paper that is like stained Glass and once applied you can see out they can't see in. I got mine at Carpet Barn in Madisonville Ky They see a lot of wall paper so you might check a wallpaper dealer near you Good Luck

If the panel is plane glass you could get some fish tank paint that looks like crystals when it is painted on the back glass of the fish tank...it comes in several colors and it looks super.

My door has the same style of window. I purchased 'Rustoleum Frosted Glass Semi-Transparent Finish' at Walmart and sprayed the glass. It gave me the privacy I needed while allowing the window to continue casting light into the room. The nice thing about the spray is that it can be removed with an acetone-based product (fingernail polish remover).

We have a door with the oval design also, and some of the design in the glass is thicker but I too had concerns about people being able to see in, until the door was installed and I looked out. Our farmhouse is about 350' from the road, so I could tell right away this was not going to be a problem. Also, our closest neighbors are on either side of the house......even farther than the 350', and none across the road. You could move your home to a remote area, or take any of the above wonderful ideas. -) (A little humor goes a long way...........I know!) Please let us see your finished product when you decide. Frankly, I see no problem with what you have.  Are you right on the street?  I live in Florida and many people have full glass front doors.  They are custom made. They would never think of painting them. However, if you want to paint your door, making your home more private and lose that lovely design I think a watered down acrylic paint would work.  OR, am I misunderstanding what you want to paint. Do you want to paint over the existing design?  Get an acrylic paint and a nice slim brush, (I would go to a craft store for that brush and buy an acrylic artist paint brush and paint) and just follow those lines in that lovely design.

My window in door is a beautiful oval, clear with some lead looking areas all clear. My issue has been not privacy but sun, it blazes in for a few hours every day and it's just too intense so I want to color the glass to look like the window is stained glass.
