garage leaks

Our home is 30 years old and we have had problems with water leaks in the garage after heavy rains all these years. What can we do around the foundation of the garage to stop this?

    waterproofing is suggested. yes, gutters & downspouts are necessary but that won't 'tighten' up the existing soil density.
