If you're using it outside, you will need to use exterior paint, stain or polyurethane.

Is it a wooden cabinet, metal...? It's a great opportunity to organize. Think about how you could use it first, then the next step will be how to accomplish that for your space. I did re-function a country style kitchen 'pantry' into a large liquor/wine cabinet. Just an example of how I was able to get things from 3 area's into one.http://www.hometalk.com/diy/kitchen-dining/kitchen-dining-furniture/upcycled-pantry-to-eclectic-liquor-wine-cabinet-6547170

The cabinet is metal, two doors, about 5 feet tall

A magnet will stick to steel so check that first. If it's steel then you will need to either put a sealant of some kind on the feet/base to keep it from causing rust stains on the deck or simply add new wooded feet. I love the weathered look so I would sand/scrape any big rust chunks off and then clear coat it with rustoleum to seal it. You could also lay it on its back after adding about six each bun type feet to the back for support. This would give you lots of horizontal storage.
